NAPHA would like to congratulate Kelly Powers of California for recently    passing her judge's examination at the 2011 U.S. National Show. Kelly also recently earned her show steward's card.


Kelly comes from generations of Peruvian Horse owners/breeders and has been a consistent winner in shows across the country for decades now and over the past few years, regularly rides in various Central American shows as well. 


She is the owner of Phenom Farms, a boutique Peruvian Horse ranch, located   in the beautiful Santa Ynez Valley. While Kelly is not horsing around, she is working hard at Citrix Online, a Goleta, CA-based software company.

Invitation to Participate with SCPPHC Parade Group Extended to all members!

Hello All,
The So Cal Peruvian Paso Horse Club is going to pursue another bid for the 2013 Rose Parade. Considering that we have been in the last three consecutive parades and the rejection rate is 50%, we seem to be holding our own, but no guarantees. This year, the club has created a hosting program for out-of-state riders. Those who do, know that parade riding makes for long days, long trips and added expenses for attire, decorations, gas, lodging and insurance! We recognize how difficult it would be for teams from out of the state to make it to California, spend the necessary time and money and then the trip home. So, we are posing a host program which will provide riders with a ranch to stay and house their horse. We and the Tournament of Roses parade application ask for a 24 month resume from horse and rider. Obviously, the parade committee is most concerned about the experience of the horse in a parade environment.

The So Cal club would charge insurance costs for the club and the parade itself; about $100. Our guests would arrive in California before the Equesfest activities in Burbank...usually 2-3 days ahead of the parade. You would be our guest at the Equestrian Party the night before Equestfest. This is a big dinner hosted by Wells Fargo Bank in a variety of facilities near Burbank. The following day is the Equestfest Performance in Burbank with the Cal team. We would likely not include the out-of-state riders in the performance due to practice requirements. But, all will enjoy the show and contribute to ground support.

So, this is a unique opportunity to be able to participate in the Big One on New Years Day...2013. The energy of this parade is like no other equestrian experience. The first 1.5 miles is the true challenge given the incredible crowd, noise, street activities, cameras..above and below, floats with odd designs, noises and activities, bands, flag twirling....you get the drift. Even the best parade horses get very excited in this environment. But we have had successful teams with good horses and all have a blast! As a participant, you also have the opportunity to purchase the unique Rose Parade Buckle and their plaque with a team photo on the parade route.

The parade is 5.5 miles. From "the pit" (staging area) to the insertion point is about .75 miles and after the end of the parade, about another .75 miles. So, plan on a 7 mile ride...about 4 hours in the saddle. (We all use borium shoes, but there is a special form to allow barefoot horses...although, I do not recommend it.) The committee has lunch waiting when we finish. If you are possibly interested, please contact me directly for more details. The parade application is due in mid-May, so plans are rolling now. We hope to be accepted again and then have a significant number of Peruvians on Colorado Blvd....where you will also often hear: "Viva Peru" from the audience!

Peruvians Shine Once again in the 2012 Rose Parade!

The Rose Parade riders were from left to right- First Row: Cathy Yaskivich, Robin James, Lauren Leatherbury, Jorge Valenzuela - Second Row: Carolyn Truskowski, Lacey James, Daryl Thompson, Ken Jallen, and Third Row: Mike Grossman, me (Kathryn Grossman), Aggie Steele, and Susan McMahan. We had no mishaps, especially since they did not put a band with drums behind us this time! Since the Natural Balance surfing dogs float (ahead of us) stopped so many times, we were allowed to make 'maneuvers' of circling around and joining up again and gaiting. Joining us in the EquestFest performance was Sean McMahan, who was just a shade too young to ride in the parade. Lacey took his place in the actual parade.

We also owe big thanks to our support people who helped to tack up, decorate and drive for us! Diana Whisenant, Ken Brown, Bill Bence and Clyde James. There were others too, that my tired brain can't pull up at the moment...

A group of five of us also gave an informative talk about our horses and parade preparations on Friday night for a large group of Road Scholars. (Cathy, Daryl, Danell Adams, Mike and me) They seemed to really enjoy it, and we got a big cheer from them in the stands on parade day!

We're so pleased that so many folks are making the most of the summer with their Peruvian horses. Regional shows like the Gold Rush Classic, Los Amigos Championship Show, the Denver Queen City Horse Show and more brought together exhibitors and friends from across the country.

An exhibition group from Colorado that included Amanda Speaker, 6-year-old Orrill Speaker, Darrell Miller and Lisa Bialy was recently invited to perform for the Peruvian consulate in Salt Lake City in honor of Peruvian Independence Day.

Chris Austin and his family hosted an open house at their Mankato, Minn., ranch that drew the general public and a local TV station.

EHV-1 Outbreak in Western States -- What You Should Know

Odds are you've seen headlines and emails about the EHV-1 outbreak in western states following the recent NCHA Western National Championships in Ogden, Utah. As of this writing, TheHorse.com reports confirmed cases of the virus in North America are now in the double digits.

Colorado is requiring permits for bringing horses into the state. Two of the six infected horses there have been euthanized. For the very latest, check the Colorado Department of Agriculture. Ten horses in California are currently infected. Other states with confirmed cases include Washington, Utah, Idaho, Oregon, and New Mexico. Canada now has four confirmed cases; one in Alberta and three in British Columbia.

Most veterinary professionals and state agencies are advising horse owners to limit travel, particularly to states with confirmed cases. Talk to your vet for the latest info specific to your local area; he or she will be receiving real-time updates from state agencies and authorities.

The publication committee has started a series of Judges Interviews. Here is our first installment....

How did you become involved with the breed?

I was blessed; my grandparents introduced me to the breed at a very
young age. They were the first, and until their retirement, the largest
breeders of Peruvian horses in the state of Louisiana. I began showing at
the age of 8, and the rest is history.

What do you love best about this breed?

The smooth gait along with the unique beauty are the trademarks of our
breed that keep me falling in love with the Peruvian horse.

What are the stand-out characteristics of a great horse?

A great horse consistently performs well in every class. A stand-out horse
is also one that has a seamless transition to each consecutive gait. Those
are the horses that are hard to keep your eyes off of, whether you are a
spectator in the stands or a judge in the middle of the arena.

What are the stand-out characteristics of a great exhibitor?

A great exhibitor knows his horse's unique attributes and limitations. An
exhibitor should work as a team with his horse. It is a joy to see that
teamwork. It's a partnership that can often be found in amateur owners
who ride their horses frequently and understand how their horses will react
to a maneuver or challenge before it is ever executed.

What's the best trait/ability you've seen in a rider? The worst?

It's all in the hands. The best thing a rider can do for both the horse's
performance and the rider’s competitive edge is to keep the hands quiet.
You should find a comfortable place for your hands and keep them there.
When you see a rider pulling on the reins and a horse's mouth is opening
and gapping, it is hard to watch. I like to see riders whose hands never
move, and the horse's mouth looks comfortable and relaxed as though it
was not even wearing a bit. That is what each exhibitor should be trying to
accomplish.

Do you care if riders use one hand or two?

It depends on the class. In breeding, gait and bozal, there are no rules
dictating a preference in how the reins are held. Our rules state that in
performance classes, one hand is preferred. I absolutely do not use
this as a final deciding factor, but do keep it in mind when judging a
performance class. I respect the rules under which we show our horses.
But I will always place the better performing horse, whether the rider is
using one hand or two.

What advice do you have for people who are new to the breed?

Do not get overwhelmed. Between our tack, show attire and oddly
named classes, it can be intimidating to jump into the world of showing
Peruvian horses. Know that everyone started new at one point or
another. Peruvian horse owners remember being new to the breed and
are unquestionably the most generous when it comes to helping new
owners and breeders. I cannot tell you how many times I have seen
veteran owners and exhibitors assisting new owners right at the entry
gate of the arena. Last-minute tack changes and adjustments are normal
and everyone seems to help each other (old or new). Even though it
is a competitive environment, the people who attend our shows are
compassionate and helpful to new owners and exhibitors.

What's your biggest challenge as a judge? Your biggest thrill?

The biggest challenge as a judge is to stay completely objective. It is
human nature to "fall in love" with an individual horse over the course of
a show. However, I believe this is what makes the difference between a
good judge and a great judge. You must see that horse as a new entry
each time it enters the arena and never make excuses why it may not be
performing as well as it has in previous classes. Many judges will give a
horse more room for error if it has been in multiple classes and suddenly
does not perform well toward the end of the show. Judges should not
make excuses for any horses and must place each entry as they see them
in specific classes. If this is making you question the number of classes
you put your horse in at one show, you are thinking correctly. Our horses
have a lot of heart and will very rarely say "no" (through their actions) when
asked to complete a class. That is why you cannot ask your horse to
compete in 10+ classes over the course of one show, then be disappointed
if it does not do well in Champion of Chamipons classes. It is not giving
your horse the best chance if it is exhausted and competing against other
horses that were more properly managed over the course of the show.

What do we need to do to better market our breed?

We need to invite more people to ride our horses. People fall in love with
our horses after only one ride. They sell themselves -- why not let them?

How do you hone your skills as a horseman/horsewoman?

I have been fortunate to have exposure to many owners, breeders, trainers
and exhibitors over the course of my life. I take something away from
each experience and value the time I spend with people who are know
our breed. It is amazing what can be learned just from listening to people
speak about our horses and the topics that they are passionate about.
Everyone has a skill or piece of information that is valuable. You just have
to stop and listen to catch it.

What's the most important thing you want us know about you as a judge?

I have a great time when judging a horse show. I find joy in seeing riders
grow through the course of a show. You will see me talking to exhibitors
and giving them advice after classes. I do not believe in watching a
mistake being made by a particular exhibitor and not giving them the
advice to help correct that mistake after the class is over. I want exhibitors
to find value in their experience at a show and feel that they have learned
something and improved by the time the show is over. Each exhibitor
should feel that they got their money's worth from their show experience
whether they won a blue ribbon or not. Each person should leave improved
from when they started. I enjoy being part of that process and take
ownership in making sure happens for as many people as possible.

Peruvians Horses Shine

Rocky Mountain Horse Expo Denver, Colorado

The Rocky Mountain Horse Expo was held at the Denver Coliseum on March 11-13, 2011, and the Peruvian Horses once again had a strong turnout. The Centennial State Peruvian Horse Club attended this year with a great turn out, and back by invitation were Phantom Dragon Ranch, Rancho Paso Fuego and Green Mountain Ranch, who participated with the Centennial State Club and in separate performances, making the Peruvian Horses the most seen breed at the Horse Expo!

Friday and Saturday evenings held The Mane Event, which was a 2 ½ hour equine musical performance, and the Peruvian Horse was there in force! Roberto Quijandria performed the Marinera followed by the Centennial State Peruvian Horse Club, riding a short drill routine. They were a hit with their flashy gold ponchos.

There were Peruvian Horses performing in the Mile High Gaited Horses Performance Team, put together by Lisa Bialy of Ranch Paso Fuego, riding her mare Vista Del Dragon and Amanda Speaker riding her stallion Altivo Imprevisto. Also riding with them was Terri Miller of Green Mountain Ranch with her Peruvian gelding, Morrillo, and they did a beautiful performance to the pop hit, “Americano”.

Quickly changing gears, Amanda Speaker did a breathtaking dance duet ridden side saddle on Altivo Imprevisto with her partner, Jeff Gutierrez, who was on Amanda’s Shire gelding, Thor. There were many other beautiful performances throughout the 2 ½ hour performances on both evenings.

The Peruvian Horses were seen throughout the Expo all three days. The Centennial State Peruvian Horse Club did a great job of having horses at the Trade Show Floor demos, and even managed to get into the Horse Trader for presenting their beautiful horses. Phantom Dragon Ranch presented Corazon Del Dragon, their 8 month old colt, throughout the barn. Everyone loved to see and pet the colt. He was a perfect ambassador of the Peruvian Breed, as he walked the barn and arenas visiting with people.

Phantom Dragon Ranch would like to thank Murdoch’s Farm and Ranch for sponsoring the Dragon Hospitality Booth and Breed Stall this year. We couldn’t have done this without Murdoch’s generous support. Special thanks goes out to Lisa Bialy of Rancho Paso Fuego for her help in planning and coordination of the Mile High Gaited Horses Performance Team, and including several of the Peruvians in their performance. And also a big thank you to Terri Miller of Green Mountain Ranch for her participation and for the beautiful aisle banners she made for all the stalls on the Dragon aisle.

We also would like to thank each and every person who had a hand in the planning, stall set up, costuming, volunteering time to help in the horse barn, and to those who showed their support by coming to Expo and The Mane Event performances. A good time and an informative Expo was had by all participants!

Exciting News for NAPHA Members!!!

Effective March 1, 2011, there will be a reduction in some of the registration fees and penalties. This reduction is made possible in part by a recent agreement with the CLRC (Canadian Livestock Registry Corporation) in Canada which will allow us to use their software program for memberships and NAPHA registrations (as opposed to having to pay $20,000 per year to Horse Stud Book). The CLRC is a government-subsidized entity which allows them to provide the registration software and services at their cost which will result in a significant savings to NAPHA. It is anticipated that during the transition from HSB (Horse Stud Book) to CLRC, we will need to run both programs, but after that, the CLRC should be able to handle all of our registration needs.

Please find the new fee schedule below as well as answers to many questions you may have about moving NAPHA's registration to CLRC. If you have additional questions, please don't hesitate to ask!

Frequently Asked Questions

The Transition to CLRC

Is our NAPHA registry combining with the Canadian Registry?

No, our NAPHA registry will be maintained separately. Essentially, all we will be doing is outsourcing to CLRC. They will handle membership and registration data input and the issuing of certificates.

Why make the change and why now?

There are a number of reasons for making the change:

· A primary reason is cost. It is expected that the CLRC will cost less than half of what NAPHA is currently spending on HSB for the same functionality. Also, HSB has let us know that they are currently losing money on NAPHA, which is probably not something we can expect them to continue to do long-term.

· NAPHA's agreement with the CLRC is a pay-per-use agreement. For example, we pay per registration issued and we pay only their actual cost since they are government subsidized. If fewer registrations or memberships are processed we pay less - unlike HSB where we pay a fixed cost, regardless of volume.

· Efficiency and responsiveness is another key reason. With only one full-time employee, NAPHA cannot provide all of the member services at the levels members expect without outsourcing some of the work or hiring additional employees. A cost-benefit analysis of the two options shows that outsourcing is much more cost-effective than hiring additional employees (which NAPHA currently does not have the funds to do).

· CLRC is a proven resource and has extensive experience registering Peruvian Horses for our Canadian neighbors. Also, their not-for-profit status and the fact that they can do NAPHA's work without adding to their existing staff is extremely cost-effective and helps both NAPHA and CLRC.

· Protection of the database is another important factor. As a government entity, the database will be extensively protected and backed up - both in Canada and in the U.S.

What about the integrity of the registry?

The CLRC has an excellent track record and currently runs registries in both the U.S. and Canada. Their contract stipulates that they will follow NAPHA's registration rules to the letter. Any questionable registrations will be referred back to NAPHA for resolution.

How about scanning and storing of things like stallion reports?

Currently NAPHA is paying a vendor for these services.CLRC will also scan all of our records, store them and send us a complete download of our database on a disk on a monthly basis. There is no change for the data storage which is an additional savings to NAPHA.

Who will be handling membership?

The CLRC will handle receipt of membership dues and will maintain the online membership directory.

What will happen to Arlynda Castro's job?

Arlynda, our current Registrar will become NAPHA's Executive Secretary and will be responsible for helping with the transition from HSB to CLRC. After that, she will serve as a resource to the CLRC on registration issues but will be able to spend the bulk of her time dealing with promotions, club and show approvals, show points, and other NAPHA programs and events.

I have paid for access to the HSB studbook so that I can research pedigrees.Does the CLRC's software have that feature?

Yes, once all of the data is transferred from HSB to CLRC, pedigree searches can be done quickly and easily using their software.

What about the part-blood registry?

Mules and part-bloods will still be registered in a separate data base by CLRC.

I have paid to list my horses for sale on HSB. What happens now?

During the transition, HSB listings of horses for sale will still be available. After that, they will be transitioned to another service. Now that our website will be linked to the USEF and CLRC websites, that will generate additional hits for those who list horses for sale.

How about the horse show program that is currently part of HSB - will the clubs still be charged $500?

The CLRC doesn't currently have an integrated horse show management program, but will be working with NAPHA to produce one that integrates with their database. Until the transition from HSB is complete, we will use the HSB program. After the transition, it is expected that the CLRC program will be up and running. If not, a show program that can be easily uploaded into the future CLRC program will be utilized. The clubs will still pay the $500 fee for show approval which will help defray the costs of creating the integrated program with CLRC and for some of Arlynda's time to administer show approvals, points, etc.

Will I have to send my membership and registration papework to Canada instead of Santa Rosa?

During the transition, we will still be processing memberships, DNA requests and registrations from the Santa Rosa, CA, office. After the transition, which may take several months, paperwork may be sent directly to Canada or sent to the Santa Rosa address. Paperwork sent to the Santa Rosa address will be forwarded to Canada once a week for processing. As soon as the transition is completed, members will be sent the Canadian address along with additional information.

A Call for Horse Stories

Do you have a special equine that you would like featured in the fifth book of the Beloved Horses series by Sharon Miner? This one will focus on horses (ponies, donkeys, mules, zebras etc.) from around the world. All accepted submitters receive a complimentary copy of the book upon its release and discounts on extra books.

"In 2010 Junior (Me Llamo Altanero) and I successfully completed 10 ACTHA competitive trail rides. At several of the rides I brought with me as many as nine other riders, so sometimes 10 to 20 percent of the total number of horses at the ride were Peruvians! I feel this has been a great venue for me to showcase our beloved breed. "
